NATALIE

6:31 PM

She had done well. I had never been on a date where anyone had put this much thought into the night. It was usually dinner and a movie and an awkward silence afterwards. Never any romance, and certainly never any gifts. Who gets a gift on a date anyway? It’s like I’m a movie star or something. And I feel so… special. I could almost fall for her. Except that… Well… I cannot get Chris out of my head. And I want to so badly, but she is embedded in my skin… in my pores… in my DNA. Her touch to my skin is like missing chromosomes returning home, making me whole again. And so, in comparison Tre stood no chance.

We pulled up to the restaurant, and when she parked the car, she got out and came around to open my door. But I had already opened the door, and she stood there awkwardly. How was I supposed to know she was gonna open my door? She’s such a gentleman. I giggled. A gentleman… How is it that a woman is treating me better than any man I ever dated?

She was so polite. Hand on the small of my back as she held the door to the restaurant open for me. Pulling out my chair once we were at our table. Saying grace with me… Ugh! Fucking Chris! It was wrong that she was creeping into my thoughts when Tre was doing such a wonderful job of treating me how I deserved. She was a gentleman. Unlike Chris who was barbaric and selfish and completely out of touch with the needs of those around her, unless those needs were sexual… then she was… perfect. But, this date was with Tre. She was far from perfect, but she was charming. And charming was good enough for right now. I was lucky to accompany her tonight.

I suppose it could only get better if I was actually attracted to her. Why can’t I be attracted to you Tre? You’ve got such a great personality, and seem cultured and educated… and you’re wealthy. That doesn’t hurt. And you’d spoil me, I’m sure… but I don’t want you.

She reached across the table and took my hand in hers.

“I have another surprise for you.”

I sighed. My hand felt uncomfortable in hers, but I didn’t want to be rude and pull away, so I let it sit there… perspiration building with each passing second.

“Another surprise?” Oh God, please don’t let this girl purpose. I couldn’t help but chuckle.

“What’s so funny?”

“Nothing. I just… nothing.” I always ruin the moment. “Please, continue with your surprise.”

“I just want you to know that I really have enjoyed spending time with you. I think you’re a great girl. I love talking to you, and you’re absolutely gorgeous.”

I laughed again, harder this time, which seemed to offend her. “I’m sorry. Please don’t get upset. I’m not laughing at you. I just… I’m not gorgeous. So… Sorry.”

“Natalie. You are gorgeous. Also, you should learn to let people compliment you.
